Eugene, OR Again, the weather cooperated and we had a dry drive from Southern CA to Oregon. We stopped as usual in Bakersfield, CA and finally saw the Tehachapi Loop, an engineering feat from the late 1800's that allows about 36 trains a day to make the climb (or descent) from the desert to the high desert. I must admit it was lovely to see, and especially so, after seeing the scale model they are building in Balboa Park's Model Train Exhibit. (San Diego.)
Tehachapi Loop, east of Bakersfield, CA (ONLY go in a towed vehicle! No parking
or turnarounds for RVs.)
The engine is just entering the tunnel and has already looped around the
cone-shaped hill in the middle. The cars in the foreground are the end of the
train.
