June 2003 Temple, Texas
This weekend we drove to nearby Crawford, TX to see the Western White House. The town was small...VERY small....now I can see why the journalists complain when they have to be in Crawford! Here's the main street and the jail! No photos of the ranch since you have to keep moving by it and there's really no view of it. However, the ranchland in that area is lovely. Gentle rolling hills that are pretty green now since we've had some good rains. We spent a weekend nearby in McKinney Falls State Park, just south of Austin, TX. It was delightful...nice campsites, good roads and trails, and only 15 minutes from the center of Austin!
It's hot and HUMID here...knife could cut it! Storms have been in the area, but so far, we've not had much bad weather. See "May 2003" and "June 2003" for photos and more info.
More photos of Salado, TX one of our favorite places! The Sewing Basket, The Dusty Rose, Salado College ruins, church
McKinney Falls State Park is an urban park south of Austin where one can hike, bike, fish, or just enjoy the lovely surroundings. We had a 50 amp campsite, complete with water hookup, picnic table, grill, and fire ring. The deer were numerous, as were newly fledged birds...cardinals, wrens, finches, etc. We even saw our first Painted Bunting which is a magnificent bird! This is a park we'll try to return to before we leave this area. (Our site, the upper falls, a breakfast visit from one of the deer) We're really enjoying the area... as much as one can in the summer in Central Texas! |
